Mercato Metropolitano Gluten Free Guide

[Updated June 2019]

Located South of the River near the Elephant & Castle roundabout, Mercato Metropolitano is London’s latest food market with a heavy focus on all things Italian and sustainability. When we visited there were some delectable gluten free options, as detailed below.

The market is open all week. Opening times: Monday – Friday 8am-11pm, Saturday 11am-11pm, Sunday 11am-10pm. Where: find it at 42 Newington Causeway, London, SE1 6DR.

Stalls with Gluten Free Options

Le Beefsteak

In the outdoor section of the market, Le Beefsteak offers gluten free steak and chips. They sometimes have gluteny items on their menu so check with them prior to ordering. The day I visited the menu was all gluten free.

Arepas Guasacaca

Arepas, the coeliac-favoured South American street food, are order of the day here. The cornmeal pockets are filled with goats cheese or with pulled beer, pico de gallo, cheese, avocado and pickles. They also sell Daura gluten free beer here.

Leggero – Homemade Pasta

A fully gluten free Italian serving up lovely fresh gluten free pasta, you will find this stall in the first section of the indoor market.

Bar (indoor market, next to the Arepa stall)

If the Arepa stall is fresh out of gluten free beer, head to the small indoor bar where they currently sell three varieties of gluten free beer.

Sicilian Granite

This granita stall is a good spot for a cooling dessert – icy traditional Sicilian granite made with fresh fruit. Try the strawberry, it is delicious!

The Italian Deli

Housed next to the market itself is an immense pop up Italian deli. Root around and you will discover gluten free gems nestled throughout, plus a dedicated gluten free section. From pasta and bread to biscuits and cakes, take a spare tote bag as you will be wanting to stock up on these goodies before you leave!
